A bus passenger, who requested anonymity, said he was sitting on the lower deck of the First 83 bus service when it heard something "like a gunshot".

The packed bus – with babies on board – was travelling along Ecclesall Road when it happened around 8.45am.

Recounting the terrifying moment, he said: "I was sitting downstairs at the time. It sounded like a gunshot and it was extremely unsettling.

"For the first few seconds, everybody seemed to freeze.

"I then looked back and saw that the window had been shattered. The driver remained calm and asked how people were."

He said the passengers were then instructed to leave the bus to wait for another one to arrive with no charge.

This is the second reported vandalism incident against First South Yorkshire service since last week.

Last Wednesday (January 8), its 11a services had to be diverted after coming under attack by stone-throwing yobs on Leighton Road and Gleadless Road.

And bus services in Sheffield are no stranger to such attacks, as they often become the subject of vandalism by irresponsible individuals.

South Yorkshire Police have previously warned the vandals to stop the dangerous practice as they are putting people’s safety at risk.

The police also warned they face arrest.

First South Yorkshire and the police have been contacted for more information.
