The force opened a new recruitment window on August 28 and so far 240 applications have been received.

South Yorkshire Police said: “Since recruitment reopened we have so far received 240 applications and are expecting to see that number rise as we go through the remaining live period.

“From an average of 1,500 applications, we see around 120 - 150 successful candidates for each live period and we hope to see the same again for this one.

“In total over the next three years, we will be recruiting more than 1,400 new officers.

“We remain in a good position to achieve our recruitment target for 2020/21 by January 2021 - we will have recruited 267 new officers, all of which will have started with the force, by October 2020.

“Our new recruitment campaign is still live and we are looking forward to receiving applications from those wanting to begin an exciting career in policing.

“It is important to us that our workforce reflects the diverse population we serve, so we are actively encouraging applications from underrepresented communities.

“This is an exciting time for South Yorkshire Police. Joining the force means taking on a challenge, but policing is a career where you can make a real difference day in, day out.”

The police recruitment drive is the biggest in decades and £750 million has been made available to fund the first wave of 6,000 recruits.

Police officer numbers had steadily decreased over the years to cut costs.
