Firefighters have been tackling the blaze in Wharncliffe Woods, which stretches from Deepcar to Oughtibridge, since around 4.20pm on Monday. A South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue spokesperson said a “large amount of woodland” was ablaze when they arrived.

No fewer than six fire crews were needed to deal with the fire on Monday and Tuesday, with five still at the scene this morning (3 June). Two crews are expected to continue tackling “deep-seated areas of fire” throughout Wednesday, with the public urged to stay away from the area.

The spokesperson said the fire had been brought under control by 8.30am on Wednesday after firefighters made “great progress overnight, helped by the change in weather.” Sheffield has seen rain today following a prolonged spell of warm weather. Showers are set to continue this week.
