She says the man was seen running into the crowds at Endcliffe Park brandishing the weapon after a big fight broke out on Saturday, June 20.

The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, says people living opposite the park on Rustlings Road are growing increasingly frustated by the huge groups of people gathering there every night, playing loud music and taking and dealing drugs.

She claims police have been ‘dismissive’ of the concerns raised by exasperated residents, who are being kept up until 1am most night, and failed to properly follow-up reports of the machete-wielding man.

“It’s been absolutely terrible. It’s not just a few young people having fun in the park, it’s like a rave every night,” she said.

“It’s thousands of young people parking their cars all along the double yellow lines, playing loud music on their sound systems, doing wheelies down the middle of the road and ordering drugs to be delivered over the fence.

“When a fight broke out last week, I ran out of the house to call police and saw a young lad with a machete running into a crowd of people.

“The police asked for photos and I said we had some but no one ever came to collect them.

“What’s most frustrating is that police are treating us like silly, nosy neighbours, and they appear quite dismissive.

“It’s been going on for at least three weeks and it’s getting worse. I’m worried there’s going to be a major incident like a stabbing or a rape.”

South Yorkshire Police said officers had been called to reports of a ‘large gathering and possible disorder’ at the park on Saturday at around 8.30pm.

“An 18-year-old man received hospital treatment for injuries suffered during the incident. He has since been discharged,” said a spokeswoman for the force.

“Enquiries are ongoing to identify those involved and officers are currently reviewing footage in relation to the incident.”

Police yesterday announced they were stepping up patrols of the park and surrounding streets, following a meeting with representatives from Sheffield Council.

A spokeswoman for the force said there were fewer issues last night than the night before, with officers desling with some ‘minor incidents of anti-social behaviour’ and people being dispersed.

“Proactive patrols are in place around Endcliffe Park and will continue tonight and throughout the weekend. Our Neighbourhood Team are aware of ongoing issues and have plans in place to deal with them,” she added.

“We have a range of powers we can use to tackle anti-social behaviour, including vehicle-related concerns, and we will be using them if necessary.”

Broomhill and Sharrow Vale ward councillor Angela Argenzio told how she had received numerous complaints from worried residents about disturbances at the park.

She said the police and Sheffield Council faced a ‘really difficult’ task there, with no easy solutions, but she was particularly concerned about reports of drug dealing there, which she claimed had never been a big problem in the past.
