A horror blaze in which a dad and his young son were killed and another was left fighting for life was started deliberately, police have confirmed.

Darren Sykes, aged 44 and his nine-year-old son Paul perished in the blaze at their home on Tennyson Close, Penistone, last Wednesday.

Firefighters pulled Darren’s other son, Jack, 12, out of the blaze alive but he was critically injured and remains fighting for life in a Manchester hospital today, with his devastated mum, Claire, at his bedside.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Police have confirmed a house fire in Penistone in which a man and his son died was started deliberately.

“Emergency services were called to a house on Tennyson Close at around 6.30pm on Wednesday, October 22. A man and his two sons were rescued from the property by firefighters.
