Many offenders have been jailed following headline-grabbing court cases recently including a killer who terrorised a couple in their own home.
Key regional cases have been heard at Sheffield Crown Court, London’s Court of Appeal and Derby Crown Court as offenders have been brought to justice during October.
Robbers who targeted a taxi-driver have been locked-up, a knife-wielding thug has been put-away and a rapist has been caged as the courts make the streets safer.
In one case a Sheffield man who originally walked free from court after breaking a child’s arm has now been jailed after the Court of Appeal reviewed the case and the defendant was resentenced to three years of custody.
Another man has also denied murdering his baby son after he has been accused of inflicting a fatal head injury on the youngster at his family home in Barnsley.

Sheffield man Andrew Newton, who broke a baby boy's arm and ribs, will now go to prison after his sentence was increased at the Court of Appeal. Newton, of Parson Cross, could not stop the baby boy from crying before he fractured his left upper arm and right thigh, according to the court. He also broke three ribs in a separate incident. Newton, who has no previous convictions, admitted a charge of cruelty to a person aged under 16 and he was originally sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court to two years of custody suspended for two years with a rehabilitation requirement and a six-month curfew. But the Court of Appeal in London resentenced him to three years of custody. Photo: submit
A father has denied murdering his baby son after the child was found with a series of horrific injuries. Sheffield Crown Court heard on October 26 during a trial how Leon Mathias, aged 33, of Stonebridge Lane, in Great Houghton, Barnsley, has pleaded not guilty to assaulting and murdering his two-month-old son Hunter who was taken to hospital with injuries on November 30, 2018, and later died on December 3, 2018. Prosecuting barrister Robert Smith KC said Hunter died in hospital as a result of a severe brain injury which was sustained just three days before and that involved internal bleeding over the surface of the brain and brain swelling. Mr Smith added that the child had also suffered three fractures to his lower limbs. Leon Mathias has pleaded not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Hunter between November 22 and 29, 2018, and he has pleaded not guilty to murdering Hunter who died on December 3, 2018.
