Heartbroken dad forced to formally identify Sheffield murder victim, inquest told

The death of Sheffield man Ramey Salem, who was shot dead earlier this month, has been described as ‘complex and distressing’ on the first day of his inquest.

Emergency services were called after Ramey Salem, also known as Remey Saleh, was found with series injuries at a property on Grimesthorpe Road South, Burngreave on Monday, November 16, the court heard.

The 20-year-old man died at around 3.23am after he was taken to the Northern General Hospital following the attack, as a result of multiple gunshot wounds according to a post-mortem examination.

Salem, who was born in Yemen on July 20, 2000, was unemployed and living as a single man before his death, senior coroner Mr David Urpeth told the inquest.

The 20-year-old’s body was formally identified by his father, the court heard.

Mr Urpeth said during the opening: “As I think you will appreciate, this is very early days in a very complex and distressing case.”

Police charged an 18-year-old man named Jabari Fanty, of Broadhead Road, yesterday (Monday, November 23) in connection to the murder of Salem.

Fanty has been further charged with conspiracy to murder at Osgathorpe Park on October 31, of this year, conspiracy to possess a firearm with intent to endanger life between October 3 and November 17 as well as possession of an offensive weapon.

Three men remain in police custody after being arrested over the weekend on suspicion of murder, two aged 18 and one aged 21.

The inquest has been adjourned and will resume on March 3, 2021.
