A gun fired outside a takeaway in Sheffield was the third shooting on the same city street in three years.

The latest alarm was raised when residents heard the sound of gunfire on Longley Avenue West, Shirecliffe, at 5pm yesterday.

Some locals thought it was the sound of fireworks, but officers deployed to the scene examined the area and found evidence of a shooting.

In a statement, the force said: “Police received reports at around 5pm of shots fired outside a takeaway in Longley Avenue West.

“Officers attended the scene and conducted a search of a nearby alleyway, discovering damage to street furniture consistent with firearms discharge.

“No injuries have been reported to us.

“Enquiries are ongoing to find those responsible, however police are keen to hear from anyone who might have witnessed the incident, or who holds information which could assist the investigation.

“Were you in the area at the time? Did you see or hear anything suspicious?”

There have been two previous shootings on the same street over recent years.

In March 2019 there were two shootings on Longley Avenue West and a neighbouring road within minutes of each other.

The first gun attack took place at the junction of Longley Avenue West and Shirecliffe Road, where shots were fired at a vehicle.

Moments later a gun was fired on nearby Cooks Wood Road.

In July 2017, a 19-year-old man was left fighting for life after a shooting on Longley Avenue West in what detectives said was a targeted attack.
