Officers were deployed to the area of open space in Crookes known as Bolehills after reports of a large group setting off fireworks despite the nationwide lockdown aimed at preventing the spread of coronavirus.

When officers arrived, just after 11.30pm, the group fled.

South Yorkshire Police said: “We received a call at 11.31pm for reports of people setting fireworks off in Bolehill Recreational Ground on Tinker Lane in Sheffield.

“Officers attended the area and upon their arrival, those identified ran away from officers.

“Officers conducted a search of the area but the group had dispersed.

“We would like to remind people that setting fireworks off in a public space is illegal and you can be prosecuted.”
