Gleadless Road: Road closed after tragedy as man dies in 'hit and run' collision on major Sheffield road

A man has tragically died after a ‘hit and run’ incident in Sheffield.

Emergency services were sent to the scene on Thursday night and closed off a section of Gleadless Road, near Gleadless Townend,

Several police cars could be seen at the scene of the incident, and blue and white police tape extended across the road while emergency services carried out their work. An ambulance was also seen at the location.

But now officers have confirmed that a man has died as a result of what has been described as a hit and run, near the junction with Ridgeway Road.

South Yorkshire Police have tonight issued a statement.

It said: “At 8.32pm officers responded to reports of a collision on Gleadless Road.

“Upon officers’ arrival it is believed a man in his 40s was involved in a collision. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers believe a dark coloured Volkswagen was involved and they’re working at pace to understand the circumstances.”

Officers say they are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have footage of the collision or cars acting suspiciously in the area at the time, or information about the those and the vehicle involved.

They are also asking people to contact their control room immediately if they see a damaged car in their area.

Road closures are currently in place on Gleadless Road and Ridgeway Road and trams are suspended.

Police are urging motorists to avoid the area.
