Funeral of police officer who died in line of duty held in Sheffield

PC Lannie tragically died in a collision in Ecclesfield while he was responding to an emergency call on Tuesday, April 21.
His funeral took place today at Grenoside Crematorium at a ceremony attended by family, friends and colleagues from across South Yorkshire Police.

Hide AdThe cortege was guided into the crematorium by motorcycle outriders and mounted police.
Before the ceremony, PC Lannie’s mum and dad paid tribute to him, as did his colleagues in roads policing team four and several senior officers including South Yorkshire Police’s Chief Constable, Stephen Watson QPM.
PC Lannie’s mum, Marie Mead, described her son as ‘thoughtful, kind and funny’.
“It broke our hearts to lose him and we miss him every day,” she said.

Hide Ad"He was such a special person, we hope he’s in a special place, we love him so dearly and he can never be replaced."
And his dad, James Lannie, said he was ‘so proud’ of everything Matt had done and achieved in his life.
He said: "I was extremely proud to say I was your father and you were my son. Rest in peace, until we meet again.”
PC Lannie joined South Yorkshire Police in 2012, working in Sheffield. In 2017, he transferred to the force’s Operational Support Unit and remained part of the OSU until his tragic death.

Hide AdIn a joint statement, his SYP unit, roads policing team four, said he would ‘always be known for your larger than life character, your infectious smile and your passion for your job’.
They added: “We are honoured to have worked alongside you, you have left a huge hole in not only our team but the wider SYP family.”
And Chief Constable Stephen Watson QPM has also thanked PC Lannie for his service.
“Matt’s dedication to protect the public is testament to his courage and professionalism, he was an upstanding constable and to protect us he made the ultimate sacrifice,” he said.
