Former Sheffield Wednesday player survives assassination attempt

Former Sheffield Wednesday player Darko Kovacevic was shot at by two hitmen outside his home in Athens, it is claimed.

According to The Sun, the retired Serbian international was shot at by two men who ambushed him as he went to park his car.

The 46-year-old went to hospital for minor injuries sustained as he threw himself to the ground as he came under attack.

Kovacevic scored four goals for Wednesday in 1996 before moving to Spanish side Real Sociedad.

He reportedly said: “I saw a man getting out of a car with a gun in his hand and coming towards me.

“I instinctively dived to the right and he fired at me.

“Then he ran, got into the car and disappeared."

In a message posted on Twitter, Real Sociedad said: “We are hearing worrying news from Athens.

“Darko, we wish you a swift recovery.”

It is not known why Kovacevic was targeted.
