The screen has been erected to shield the crash scene from passing motorists as collision investigators continue to carry out enquiries to establish exactly what happened.

South Yorkshire Police said emergency services were alerted to the collision on the southbound M1, between Junction 36 for Barnsley and 35A for Tankersley, at 5.30am.

Traffic around the crash scene is heavy, with motorists following a signed diversion.

But a 10-vehicle collision on the nearby A628 at Flouch is adding to congestion in the area.

Police said those involved in that collision escaped with minor injuries.
