Firefighters suspect arson in latest South Yorkshire clubland blaze, as police issue statement
Blaze is the latest to hit a former clubland venue
This was the scene at a former working men’s club after a serious blaze.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service deployed crews late on Sunday afternoon after a blaze broke out at Swinton Working Men’s Club, known locally as Swinton Bottom Club, on Station Road, Swinton, near Rotherham.

Emergency services say they believe the fire to have been deliberately started, and crews were at the scene for nearly five hours.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said today: “Several fire crews were called out to a derelict building fire at 4.02pm (August 23) on Station Street, Swinton, Rotherham.
“Luckily there were no reports of any casualties. The fire is believed to have been started deliberately. Crews left the scene at 8.54pm.”
South Yorkshire Police are now also looking into the incident.
The force said in a statement “At 4.22pm on Sunday (August 23) we were informed of a fire at a property on Station Street, Swinton, by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
“It is believed the fire was started deliberately and enquiries are ongoing.”
It is the latest former working men’s club to be set alight in a suspected arson attack.
Emergency services were recently sent to Shiregreen Working Men’s Club, Sheffield, made famous as the location of the stripping scene in the well-known film The Full Monty.
And in December 2021, fire crews were sent to a large fire at the former Manor Social Club, on City Road, Sheffield.
Anyone with information about the Swinton blaze should call 101 and quote incident number 623 of August 23, 2026.
