Sheffield Crown Court heard on May 6 how James Walker, aged 35, of Norfolk Close, Monk Bretton, Barnsley, flagged down a motorist on Burton Road, at Monk Bretton, before reaching into the vehicle and stealing the car keys.

Ben Thomas, prosecuting, said Walker had told the motorist he was taking his car but the victim refused to get out of the VW vehicle.

Another motorist spotted Walker acting aggressively and he stopped to help and refused to leave even after Walker had threatened him.

Walker was identified from dashcam footage, according to Mr Thomas.

The carjacking victim stated he had stopped because he thought Walker needed help but he feels he will have to be careful in the future before stopping to help others.

He also admitted committing a theft and an assault after leaving the Full House pub, on Rotherham Road, Barnsley, with two other men in February.

Mr Thomas said Walker grabbed and stole a mobile phone from one of the men before repeatedly punching him.

Edward Moss, defending, said Walker, who is remorseful, has mental health problems and needs help because when he turns to alcohol he offends.

The Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Jeremy Richardson QC, sentenced Walker to 15-months of custody.
