He was taken to hospital for surgery and remained in a serious condition last night.

Sergeant Adam Wood, from the Sheffield Central and North West neighbourhood policing team, said: “Extra officers are patrolling the Broomhall area today (Wednesday) and for the rest of the week to provide further reassurance and I’d encourage anyone with any concerns to speak to one of our officers.

“We know an incident like this causes understandable concern within the local community.

“I’d like to assure residents in Broomhall we have put measures in place to make sure people feel safe. We are also in direct contact with members of the local community, including elected members, to provide reassurance.”

Detective Inspector Andy Shields said: “This was obviously a very disturbing incident and we are carrying out extensive enquiries to build up a picture of the circumstances leading up to the firearm discharge.”

Two arrests were made for firearm possession in raids carried out after the shooting, but the men in custody are not being held over the gun attack.

Anyone with information should call 101 and quote incident number 938 of February 18.
