Extra police on duty in Sheffield for first weekend since pubs re-opened after lockdown

Extra police officers have been drafted in to work in Sheffield for the first weekend since pubs reopened.

Pubs were allowed to reopen on Monday as lockdown restrictions were eased this week.

As a precaution, with beer gardens expected to be busy this weekend, police chiefs have ordered extra officers to work.

South Yorkshire Police said the force has seen ‘minimal disorder’ since pubs started trading again.

In a statement today, it said: “We do have operational plans in place and additional officers on duty to support with the first weekend of hospitality reopening in South Yorkshire.

“Since Monday, we have experienced minimal disorder connected to the reopening of licensed premises, but we will continue to work closely with our partners and licensing to ensure any concerns are addressed and premises are aware of their responsibilities in respect of being Covid secure.

“Local neighbourhood officers will be patrolling Sheffield City Centre this weekend and engaging with businesses an customers.”
