Detectives in South Yorkshire are working on 15 murder cases after a fatal stabbing last weekend.

The death of 43-year-old Stephen Riley in Barnsley is the 15th homicide in the county since New Year’s Day.

He was found injured in Darley Avenue, Athersley, on Friday, June 26 and was taken to hospital but could not be saved and was pronounced dead in the early hours of the following day.

A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and a 41-year-old woman is being held on suspicion of assisting an offender.

A post mortem examination revealed Mr Riley suffered a fatal wound to his chest.

The first murder investigation of 2020 for South Yorkshire Police was launched in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Isaiah Usen-Satchell, aged 18, was injured in a brawl on St Aiden’s Road, Norfolk Park, Sheffield, at around 4.20am.

The university student had been out on New Year’s Eve, returned to his Norfolk Park home and became embroiled in violence shortly after he went out again.

Arrests have been made but nobody has yet been charged.

Just over a week later, two-year-old Keigan O’Brien died of head injuries after falling ill at his home in Bosworth Road, Adwick, Doncaster.

His mum Sarah O’Brien, 32, and her boyfriend Martin Currie, 36, are both accused of murder.

Jordan Marples-Douglas, 23, was stabbed to death in his home on Woodthorpe Road, Woodthorpe, Sheffield, on Friday, March 6.

Two men have been charged with murder.

Later that month, Xiangyu Li died after an attack in Sheffield city centre.

The 26-year-old, who was from China but living in Kent at the time of his death, was visiting friends in Sheffield when he was attacked in Union Street at around 3.30am, on Tuesday, March 24.

One man has been charged with murder.

Mum-of-three Victoria Woodhall, 31, was found with multiple stab wounds in Windsor Crescent, Barnsley, on Sunday, March 29.

A man has been charged with her murder.

On Thursday, April 2, Stafford Garner, 46, was found by paramedics seriously injured in his home in Monsal Street, Thurnscoe, Barnsley.

He was taken to hospital where he remained in a critical condition until his death three days later.

Five arrests have been made over the death.

Terry Johnson, 49, was found unresponsive in a flat in Gell Street, Broomhall, Sheffield, at around 5am on Friday, May 15.

When paramedics arrived they pronounced him dead at the scene.

A man arrested on suspicion of murder and another man arrested on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug were both released under investigation.

Paul Crossley, 53, died following a fight between a group of men on Longley Hall Way, Longley, Sheffield, on Friday, May 15.

He was taken to hospital for treatment but died four days later.

Two men have been charged with murder.

The same day that Mr Crossley died, Amanda Sedgwick, 49, was found dead at a property in Manor Way, Askern, Doncaster.

A man was arrested on suspicion of murder and released under investigation.

On Sunday, May 24, Michelle Morris suffered a head injury during a disturbance at a property on Ramskir View, Stainforth, Doncaster,

The 52-year-old was taken to hospital for treatment but could not be saved and died three days later.

Three arrests were made.

Stephen Georgeson, 32, died after suffering a serious head injury in a suspected attack in the Houghton Road area of Thurnscoe, Barnsley.

He was found injured on Friday, June 5 and died two days later.

A number of arrests have been made.

On the same day that Mr Georgeson was found injured, 26-year-old Amy Stringfellow was found critically injured in a house on Dryden Road, Balby, Doncaster.

The mum-of-one could not be saved and was pronounced dead a short time later.

A man has been charged with her murder.

Three days later, on Monday, June 8, the body of a 28-year-old woman, who has not yet been named, was found in a property on Main Street, Mexborough, Doncaster.

Two men were arrested over the death.

Last Friday, a 35-year-old woman was found unconscious in a property on Pavilion Way, Shiregreen, Sheffield.

She died in hospital later that day.

A man was arrested on suspicion of murder.
