Officers have been searching for what has been described as “potentially explosive substances.”

A 100-metre cordon was placed around a home on Mapplebeck Road yesterday (Tuesday, September 15, 2026), resulting in nearby homes being evacuated.

It followed the discovery of “additional items” in a concealed area in the property, Assistant Chief Constable Ian Proffitt, of South Yorkshire Police, said this afternoon (Wednesday, September 16, 2026).

And now, authorities say they are unable to confirm if residents will be able to return to their homes tonight (Wednesday), and are encouraging people to make alternative arrangements.

An update on behalf of South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield City Council, issued a few moments ago, states: “We know this continues to be a difficult and unsettling time for everyone affected by the ongoing search and investigation taking place at a property in Mapplebeck Road, High Green, and we would like to thank residents for their continued patience, understanding and support.

“Due to the complexity of the search and investigation, and the need to ensure the safety of local people, emergency service personnel and partner agencies, the evacuation and associated road closures remain in place this afternoon.

“We are doing all we can to try to get those who have been evacuated back to their homes as quickly as possible, however, at present, we are unable to confirm if residents will be able to return to their homes this evening. Therefore, we are encouraging people to make plans to be away from their homes and businesses for another evening, as a precaution.

“We appreciate that it will be frustrating and disappointing that we are unable to give affected residents a specific timescale regarding returning home. Please be assured that all agencies involved are working together to progress the operation as safely and efficiently as possible, while carefully managing the significant risks involved.

“Residents affected by the evacuation are encouraged to follow Sheffield North East NPT on Facebook for the latest operational updates and information about the ongoing police response.”

Speaking this afternoon, a South Yorkshire Police spokesperson confirmed the number of homes evacuated is around 70.

The army’s bomb disposal unit is leading the search.

In addition to Mapplebeck Road, a number of streets have been closed including Griffiths Road, School Road, Worrall Road, Beechwood Road, Hawthorne Road, Entwhistle Road and Greenwood Road.
