Curtis Bagley lashed out as he was detained by officers after a short chase, when he was stopped on suspicion of motoring offences, on October 19, 2019.

During the struggle he yanked a lanyard which caused one officer a minor neck injury, said prosecutor Ian West.

He said Bagley was "aggressive and uncooperative" at the police station and spat through the cell hatch, hitting three officers on their faces and shoulders.

He repeated this a short time later when a fourth officer came to check on him.

"In the morning when he sobered up he had no recollection of anything and apologised," said Mr West.

Richard Canning, mitigating, said Bagley has remained in full-time work installing gas and internet cables.

"He has pleaded guilty and knows his actions were disgraceful," he said. "He wishes to pass on his apologies once again."

Bagley, 24, of Highfield Avenue, Athersley South, Barnsley, pleaded guilty to five counts of assaulting an emergency worker and motoring offences, including driving without a licence or insurance, failing to provide a specimen and failing to stop.

Judge Michael Slater said a rehabilitation order would “set him up to fail” because previous court supervision proved "unworkable" around Bagley's job, but he would be able to “suspend the inevitable sentence to reflect society's disgust at his offences.”

On Thursday, Bagley received nine months, suspended for 18 months, and he was banned from driving for 12 months.
