A driver escaped injury after their car exploded into flames and crashed into a house in Sheffield.

The driver of a grey Mercedes C220 was unhurt after the vehicle caught fire in Crookesmoor Road, Sheffield, earlier this week.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said the incident took place at just after 11.45am on Wednesday and added: “Minor damage was caused to a nearby house. No one was injured.

“The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault with the vehicle.”

An eyewitness who saw the aftermath of the fire, but declined to be named, said: “We heard a really loud bang.

“Then we saw a fire engine and the street filling with smoke. It brought traffic to a standstill.

“At first we thought there had been a gas explosion or a house fire.

“The car was completely burnt out and it has made a bit of a mess of the area.”
