Driver caught doing nearly 120mph on M1 in South Yorkshire told police 'people wanted to cause him harm'

A driver who was caught doing nearly 120mph on the M1 near Barnsley claimed he was being followed by people who ‘wanted to cause him harm’.

But police failed to buy the motorist’s excuse and found he had already been flagged for anti-social driving.

Officers told how they had pulled the car over on Monday. August 31, at around 10.15pm after it sped past a marked police vehicle at nearly 120mph.

“The driver told us that he was driving at almost double the speed limit as he had people that wanted to cause him harm and were following him,” they said.

When police explained there was no one else travelling anywhere near that fast, the driver claimed it wasn’t just one person following him but ‘a whole team’.

Checks on the car showed it already had ‘Reform Act’ warnings recorded against it – enabling officers to seize a vehicle if it continues being driven in an anti-social manner.
