Doncaster woman stabbed partner because “she had enough of him”

Caroline Conway's relationship with the "vulnerable" and alcohol-dependent man was described as "volatile" and characterised by her violence towards him, said prosecutor Louise Gallagher.

A neighbour saw her banging on his front door with a shovel and complaining he hadn't bought the right vegetables, at the communal flats where they both lived, on Tickhill Road, Maltby, Doncaster, on April 27.

He followed her back to her flat after she claimed she had taken tablets.

"I am going to kill myself after I kill you," Conway told him, said Ms Gallagher. She approached him with a knife and cut him three times on the bicep and once in the back.

"He was in shock and was "shaking like mad.” The floor was covered in blood though he felt little pain."

When his mum rang him, he told her he was "bleeding a lot and was going to sleep."

She told him to call an ambulance and he did. The "gaping wounds" were cleaned and stitched, but had "no further consequences."

Earlier that day Conway had posted Facebook messages to her victim's mother which said: "I am going to kill myself. I have had enough of your son."

And after the attack, she told her daughter: "I have stabbed Paul. I am going to kill myself. He won't leave me alone. I have had enough."

The court heard her victim doesn't want a restraining order and says the relationship is over but hopes they can remain friends.

Ms Gallagher said that at the time, Conway was on a community order from April 2019 for spitting at an emergency worker, which she has breached three times.

Ian West, mitigating, said Conway had a very troubled life and her previous relationship had been "toxic."

He said she has alcohol and mental health issues, and her situation was exacerbated by the Covid-19 lockdown.

Conway, 45, of Tickhill Road, Maltby, Doncaster, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm. Judge Rachael Harrison jailed her for 18 months.
