Cllr Chris Carter was contacted by a member of his parish who had found the mess in woodland backing onto the park, close to her house on Oldfield Road.

He has taken the opportunity to warn people not to misuse green spaces in the city, and to make sure arrangements are made when taking day trips while public facilities are closed.

He said: “Since the public toilets are closed someone has evidently used woodland near Stannington Park.

“It is disgusting to fellow humans precisely because it is potentially dangerous and can spread diseases including the coronavirus.

“If you do go on day trips, think about what arrangements you will make if you can’t find a toilet. Motorway toilets are mainly open.”

The resident also told Cllr Carter that she has seen people using the woods to gather in groups to have picnics.

Cllr Carter warned people not to use parks for gathering in large groups before it is legal.

He added that, while the park was sometimes used for legal ‘wild camping’ activities, it was important that people did not stay overnight illegally.

He said: “People are itching to go on holiday, but even camp sites are closed for now. It is possible that some might consider breaking the law and indulge in a spot of wild camping.

“Please don’t jump the gun and break the law, but wait until you can camp legally again.”
