Detectives have been granted extra time to quiz a man arrested over the shooting of a 12-year-old boy in Sheffield.

The 25-year-old, from Sheffield, was arrested on Wednesday over a drive-by shooting on Northern Avenue, Meersbrook, last Sunday afternoon.

He is being held on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Detectives were granted a 32-hour extension to custody time limits yesterday.

A 30-year-old man also arrested on suspicion of the same offences was released earlier this week while enquiries continue.Police believe the boy injured in the shooting was an innocent bystander caught up in a feud between two rival organised crime groups.

The youngster was taken to hospital for surgery after the shooting and one of South Yorkshire’s most senior ranking police officers, Assistant Chief Constable Tim Forber, said the force could have been dealing with a fatality.
