A desperate shoplifter who had been struggling without benefits stole laundry gels to sell on so he could buy food.

Sheffield Magistrates’ Court heard on December 31 how Grenville Cotterill, aged 48, of Park Mount, Clifton, Rotherham, struck at Poundland on Howard Street, Rotherham, but was caught after he was captured on CCTV.

Robert Coyne, prosecuting, said the property was not recovered and Cotterill stated he sold the gels on to buy food.

Cotterill, who has previous convictions, pleaded guilty to the theft which happened on November 6.

Matthew Shepherd, defending, said Cotterill has had a problem with drugs but there has been a slow-down in his offending and the drug problem is not as “prevalent” as it has been due to health problems.

Mr Shepherd added Cotterill’s benefits had been stopped pending an appeal.

Magistrates sentenced Cotterill to a 12-month community order with a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement. He must pay £110 including a victim surcharge and compensation.
