Derbyshire Police arrest man for gun possession and pair accused of robbing elderly lady on M1

Armed police officers arrested a man on the M1 in Derbyshire who was found in possession of a gun.

Police stopped the suspect, who was travelling in a silver Mercedes, after he was previously seen with a handgun. The weapon was subsequently recovered and the man arrested, with the Mercedes seized.

Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit were supported by the force’s armed response unit as well as the dog section.

The Roads Policing Unit also arrested two people on the M1 who were travelling in a car linked to a theft from an “elderly female” in the West Midlands.

The pair are accused of distracting the woman by asking for directions to a hospital, then stealing her bank card. Police said £7000 had already been spent on the card when they were arrested.

A force spokesperson said it was believed the pair were planning to commit the same offence in Derbyshire. Their vehicle was also seized.
