Dangerous Sheffield driver jailed after police chase ended in crash

A dangerous driver who fled from police in a high-speed pursuit before he crashed into another motorist has been locked-up.

Sheffield Crown Court heard on September 9 how Neil Turner, aged 43, of Crookesmoor Road, Crookesmoor, Sheffield, failed to stop for police while he was driving a Mercedes 4x4 vehicle on Bradfield Road, Sheffield.

James Gould, prosecuting, told a previous hearing Turner failed to stop and set off at excessive speeds cutting through traffic, mounting a kerb at a crossroads with built-up traffic, and driving over a kerb with a vehicle coming towards him.

Mr Gould added a motorist and her eight-year-old daughter had also just moved through a green traffic light on Halifax Road, Sheffield, when her Toyota vehicle was jolted by Turner's vehicle and pushed into railings and the vehicle spun and she was struck a second time by the defendant’s vehicle.

The motorist stated she has suffered with a loss of confidence as a result of the collision and her daughter has suffered nightmares.

Mr Gould added Turner was aggressive as police detained him.

The defendant, who has previous convictions but none for driving, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving after the incident in April, last year.

Tim Gaubert, defending, said Turner has had mental health problems and substance misuse issues and has faced a long delay for his sentencing through no fault of his own.

Mr Gaubert added thankfully no one was seriously injured in the collision and Turner has been complying with the probation service.

He said: “He does wish to change his ways and he is remorseful after what happened and has asked after the welfare of those involved.”

Recorder Abdul Iqbal QC said police had been alerted because it was suspected Turner had been drink-driving but this charge has not been brought against the defendant.

He sentenced Turner to ten months of custody and imposed a driving disqualification of two years which will begin after his release from prison.

He told Turner he had gone through red traffic lights before the collision and added: “It was a miracle there was no more serious injury to others or a fatality as a result of that collision.”
