Dangerous driver is spared from jail after he crashed into a police vehicle

Sheffield Crown Court heard on April 19 how Bradley Deakin, aged 19, of Windhill Crescent, Mexborough, came to the attention of police in Mexborough when the vehicle he was driving registered as having no MOT certificate.
Tom Heath, prosecuting, said Deakin made off from officers and was found on Mallory Drive where he accelerated towards Clayfield Avenue and travelled to Pitt Street.

Hide AdDeakin drove on the wrong side of the road towards Greens Way reaching speeds in excess of 80mph in a 40mph zone, according to Mr Heath, and another police car joined the pursuit.
Mr Heath said Deakin overtook four vehicles while oncoming traffic was approaching and he continued on Station Road and Bridge Street.
He added: “The vehicle appeared from Midland Road and turned left after police tried to block it off and it collided with the front nearside of the police car.”
Deakin got out if the vehicle and fled but he was taken to the ground by officers, according to Mr Heath.

Hide AdThe defendant told police he was only a provisional driving licence holder and he had panicked and knew he should not have been driving.
Deakin added that the vehicle involved had been sold to him and he had intended to park it until he passed his driving test.
The defendant, who has no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and to driving without insurance after the incident on December 5, 2020.
Edward Moss, defending, said: “He’s a young man who shows a great deal of immaturity and he has brought a great deal of shame upon himself and his family.”

Hide AdMr Moss added that Deakin regrets his actions and is not someone who will trouble the courts again.
Recorder Mark McKone QC sentenced Deakin to 16 months of custody suspended for two years with a nine-month curfew and a Rehabilitation Actvity Requirement. Deakin was disqualified from driving for two years.
