Councillor’s promise to Sheffield community left ‘appalled’ after fatal stabbing on estate

Councillor Jim Steinke, who represents Nether Edge and Sharrow, visited the Lansdowne estate in Highfield yesterday to speak to residents in the wake of the fatal stabbing, which he described as a ‘shocking death’.

Kamran Khan, aged 28, was found seriously injured outside a property on Club Garden Road, Highfield, at around 2.15am on Sunday.

He was taken to hospital but pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

A post-mortem examination revealed he died as a result of a stab wound to the chest.

A 30-year-old man arrested on Sunday on suspicion of murder remained in custody for further questioning last night.

Coun Steinke said: “This is indeed a shocking death, which has appalled the whole community on Lansdowne.

“I have talked with the police and members of the local community, and am sure that the police are doing all they can to try and resolve this crime.

“Lansdowne estate is normally seen as a safe place to live, by the wide range of people living there that I speak to regularly, and crimes like this are still an exception.

“When I was there, I was impressed by the number of people who live and work there, who said that they were determined to assist the police as much as possible, but were also going to continue to make improvements for their whole community, to make Lansdowne an even better place to live.”

DI Scott Harrison said the killing is being treated as an ‘isolated incident’ and that there is no wider risk to the community.

But community group Mums United has renewed its call for CCTV cameras in the area after the death.

Member Sahira Irshad said the group has been asking Sheffield Council for safety improvements for three years following a rise in issues with drug dealing and gangs.

Sheffield Council has not yet responded to calls for the cameras.
