The youngster was described by South Yorkshire Police as an ‘innocent' bystander caught up in a feud between two warring gangs.

The intended target of the shooting is believed to have been in the area when the gun was fired, but it was the 12-year-old boy who was mistakenly hit.

Last night the gunman responsible remained at large.

Coun Miskell said: “The community in Arbourthorne is outraged and are united in their disgust at the spate of firearms incidents over recent weeks.

“We are heartbroken that an innocent 12-year-old boy was injured in the latest incident and the entire community wishes him a speedy recovery.

“Everyone needs to feel safe in Arbourthorne and the community are understandably demanding action and answers.

“I stand with them in saying that enough is enough.”

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Forber said: “At this stage we suspect that the target of the attack was another male in the area at the time. We suspect this is about a dispute between two organised crime groups – and this is linked to a number of incidents which have taken place since mid-November.”

“This is a shocking incident.”

Anyone with information about the shooting should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 and quote incident number 516 of January 12.
