A CRACKDOWN has been launched in Rotherham on residents claiming a single person discount on their council tax when they are not entitled to it.
The 25 per cent discount is given to more than 37,000 households across the town, where there is supposed to be only one adult living there – the equivalent of £9 million.
But following an Audit Commission report the authority is to compare its council tax information with other databases to identify those households where more than one adult is living at an address and the discount is still being claimed.
Those who claim but no longer qualify must notify the authority immediately and their discount will stop – with no further action.
But those who keep quiet could face investigation and be slapped with a bill for arrears.
Coun Jahangir Akhtar, deputy leader said: “Most council tax discounts are claimed honestly but there are times where a householder’s circumstances change and they forget to tell us.
“If you receive a discount you should not receive, this is your final chance to tell us.”
