Three lanes of the motorway were closed after the sports car was hit from behind near Wakefield yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, June 24).
The vehicle had stopped due to a mechanical failure before it collided with a van, leaving the van driver with head injuries not thought to be serious.
PC Richard Whiteley, of West Yorkshire Police, tweeted a picture of the damage to the Lamborghini- believed to be worth around £200,000.
He said: “It’s only a car! But on this occasion a 20 minute old brand new Lamborghini that stopped due to mechanical failure in lane 3, then hit from behind by an innocent motorist #couldhavecried.”
The smash, between Junction 40 at Flushdyke and Junction 39 at Durkar, caused long delays as police recovered the vehicles.
