Have your say

Elderly residents are being warned of thieves trying to con their way into homes in Barnsley by pretending to work for a construction firm.

Over the last week, two men have called at four properties - two in Worsbrough and two close to the town centre - using a variety of guises to trick their way into homes.

They claimed to be from a reputable roofing construction company, said the were carrying out guttering work and claimed to be selling garden furniture.

Detective Sergeant Pete Swift said: “These men are preying on the trusting nature of elderly residents and taking advantage of their vulnerability.

“I would urge all residents to please follow our advice regarding door step callers, and would ask if you have elderly friends and family to please also share this advice with them.

“If someone attends at your door without an appointment, ask to see their identification.

“If you are unsure about their ID do not let them into your home. Advise you are going to check with their company and give them a call. If the person is reputable, they will have no problem with you doing this.

“If you have any concerns at all, refuse entry to your property and ask them to call to make an appointment.”
