Sheffield North East neighbourhood policing team carried out the operation on Friday night, and say there will be more to come.

A spokesman said: “Speeding is one of the fatal four reasons why people get killed and seriously injured on our roads. Your local team want to take this opportunity to remind drivers the importance of sticking to the speed limit.

“We have continued our road safety patrols and tonight focused on Buchanan Road and Deerlands Avenue. It is disappointing to report that we processed a top speed of 49mph on Deerlands Avenue and 43mph on Buchanan Road with several drivers prosecuted for excessive speed.

“Due to the poor weather at this period of the year, the risks of speeding are even higher. In winter, road conditions are often worse, and visibility is reduced by limited daylight hours.

“We will be conducting similar operations over the coming weeks and months. Please watch your speed so we don’t have to.”

Residents commenting on social media have raised concerns about speeding in the area.

One described 49mph as ‘slow’ for the road. She added: “Trust me I live there and regularly see cars go well over the actual speed limit – many going 60 plus. I know the police are busy and can’t possibly monitor the roads more often but certain roads around here need something to monitor the speeds.”

Another called on offiers to come and take action at Windmill Lane. She said it was supposed to be 20 miles an hour, but cars came along at up to 50mph, adding there had been an accident recently involving two cars chasing each other.

Another called for action at Yew Lane. “They travel 50 to 60mph up here,” she said. “Someone is going to get hurt.”
