Superintendent Shelley Hemsley, said: “Alcohol can be an aggravating factor, and at a time of increased anxiety, we are unfortunately preparing to see a rise in reports of domestic abuse.

“The restrictions which have been in place throughout Covid-19 have meant many domestic abuse victims feel increasingly isolated. It’s important that if needed, these victims can reach us.

“There are numerous ways you can report abuse to us and we are here to help and keep you safe.

“If you are a neighbour, relative or member of the public who hears or sees domestic abuse taking place or are concerned about someone’s safety, please consider contacting the police.”

Victims of domestic abuse in need of immediate and emergency help should call 999.

Those in a situation where they are unable to speak should attempt to use the ‘55 silent solution’.

The operator will ask callers to cough or press their keypad if they are able to, which lets them know they are being listened to.

Callers will then be asked to press 55 if it is an emergency, a location will be determined and an assessment on what police response to send will be made based on what can be heard in the background.
