Abby Wildgoose said she is disappointed that the driver of a car which narrowly missed colliding with her young daughter, Amaria, is still at large after police officers failed to respond to her 999 call about the incident.

The mum-of-one said her daughter had just got out of their car on Wincobank Avenue, Wincobank, when another car came speeding down the street, lost control and started careering towards the little girl.

Abby, 25, said if it had not been for Amaria’s quick thinking auntie jumping out of the way of the path of the car with the toddler they could have been seriously injured or killed.

The car ended up crashing into a fence on the street but instead of remaining at the scene the driver reversed and drove off.

Abby said: “My partner got out of our car and started running down the street after the driver and managed to get his registration plate.

“We dialled 999 and gave them the details but a few minutes later we got a call back asking us to go to our local police station to report the incident instead.

“We went to Ecclesfield but it was closed and it was closed the next day too because it was a Sunday, so I have lodged a complaint.”

She added: “I cannot believe that we reported this straight away when there was a chance of the police tracking down the car and the driver but nothing was done.

“If the police had come out there and then, they might have found the driver, but instead he is still out there free to put other lives at risk.

“Would it have taken the death of my daughter for the police to have acted?”
