Chesterfield businessman made fake VAT claims

A businessman who ran three pubs in and around Derbyshire has received a 12-month suspended jail sentence for attempting to steal over £130,000 by making fraudulent VAT repayment claims.

William Ludlam, aged 27, was a director of MI Leisure Limited, which operated The Hollingwood, Private Drive, Hollingwood, Chesterfield; Late Lounge, St Marys Gate, Chesterfield and the Fox and Hounds, Marsh Lane, Eckington.

He submitted fake invoices and paperwork falsely claiming that the company was refurbishing properties. He also under declared sales income from the business to avoid paying VAT between 2010 and 2011.

Ludlam, whose Derbyshire address cannot be disclosed, also made false VAT repayment claims of more than £30,000 for his motor accessories business, William Ludlam Ltd.
