Police said the occupant of a silver Volkswagen abandoned the vehicle facing towards oncoming traffic just after a roundabout on the Dearne Valley Parkway.

A South Yorkshire Police Operations Support spokesperson said: “They didn’t bother to ring us and tell us that there might be a problem. They didn’t even leave a note.

"They just left the car unlocked and wandered off into the cold night, apparently hoping that other motorists would see it in time and wouldn’t smash into it. Fingers and toes crossed.”

Following heavy snowfall throughout the region on Thursday, police said they spent ‘a significant amount of time dealing with a combination of collisions and vehicles abandoned in places where they really shouldn’t have been’.

The spokesperson added: “We understand that lots of people found themselves stuck in motoring situations they didn’t want to be in over the last day, but if you need help, particularly if it means your car is left looking it’s part of the aftermath of some Hollywood action film, please let us know.

“Yes, we have been busy, but we will always do our best to help. Even if you just leave a note in the window. At least then we know you are OK and in one piece, and where to contact you about your car if we need to.”

The car was recovered an as abandoned vehicle.
