"Nobody was hurt in the incident, but the safety and well-being of our passengers, drivers and the public are our number one priority, so this was a necessary decision.

"However, we apologise to our passengers for any inconvenience caused."

The company said the incident has been reported to the police.

Bus services in Sheffield are no stranger to such attacks, as they often become the subject of vandalism by irresponsible individuals.

South Yorkshire Police have previously warned the vandals to stop the dangerous practice as they are putting people’s safety at risk.

The police also warned they face arrest.

A number of services had to be diverted in October last year because of yobs hurling stones and missiles at buses in High Green and Gleadless Valley.

This came after yobs previously targeted buses up to five nights in a row in early September in Gleadless Valley, Batemoor and Jordanthorpe.
