Burglaries increase in Sheffield suburbs during coronavirus lockdown

Burglaries have risen in some Sheffield suburbs during the coronavirus lockdown, police have revealed.

A number of homes in Heeley, Meersbrook and Norton Lees have been targeted during recent days, with opportunistic thieves taking advantage of unlocked windows and doors to gain entry in many cases.

Kenneth Blake, PCSO for Sheffield South West, said: “Although at this time with residents being more at home it is vitally important for residents to ensure that their properties are secure when retiring for the night or being out when collecting essentials.

“Any suspicious activity should be passed to South Yorkshire Police asap in order to allow officers to attend and conduct area searches for possible offenders.”

Norton Lees Road and Meersbrook Park Road are among the streets targeted in recent nights.

Inspector Colette Fitzgibbons said most burglaries in the Heeley area had happened overnight. She urged people to ensure their windows and doors were locked and to report any suspicious activity.
