Broomhall shooting leaves man ‘seriously injured’

Police were called by the ambulance service shortly after 11.30pm.

On arrival, a 24-year-old man was found outside an address on William Street with injuries to his back and neck consistent with a shooting.

The man was taken to hospital where he has undergone surgery and remains in a serious condition.

T/Detective Inspector Andy Shields, investigating, said: "This was obviously a very disturbing incident and we are carrying out extensive enquiries to build up a picture of the circumstances leading up to the firearm discharge.

“We currently believe the victim was shot as he was walking near the recreational area off Upper Hanover Street, and then made his way onto William Street where emergency services attended.

"As part of our investigation, warrants have been executed at addresses on William Street and Wharncliffe Road in Broomhall overnight and our officers remain at these properties today as we continue our work.

"During the execution of the warrant on William Street, two men, aged 24 and 27, were arrested on suspicion of possession of firearms with intent. The arrests are unrelated to last night's incident and both men remain in police custody.

"I'd urge anyone who may have information which could help us with our enquiries to contact us in the strictest confidence."

Broomhall Sgt Adam Wood said: "We know an incident like this causes understandable concern within the local community. I'd like to assure residents in Broomhall we have put measures in place to make sure people feel safe. We are also in direct contact with members of the local community, including elected members, to provide reassurance.

"Extra officers are patrolling the Broomhall area today and for the rest of the week to provide further reassurance and I'd encourage anyone with any concerns to speak to one of our officers."
