Boozed-up reveller bit two police officers in Sheffield

Sheffield Magistrates’ Court heard on January 23, how Benjamin Hogan, 23, of Kenninghall View, Sheffield, had been arguing with his girlfriend after a night-out and was arrested when he became abusive and refused to co-operate.

Rob Coyne, prosecuting, said: “Police were called to an incident outside the Premier store, on Cherry Street, Sheffield, and on arrival officers have seen a male and female in an argument.

“The defendant was that male. He was described as being drunk and using abusive language towards the officers.”

Mr Coyne added Hogan was arrested for being drunk-and-disorderly and while he was being taken to a vehicle he bit a police officer on a finger drawing blood.

Hogan kicked the same officer between the legs, according to Mr Coyne, and as another officer tried to put Hogan in a van the defendant bit him on the inside of his thigh.

Hogan claimed the officers had come for no reason because nothing had happened.

But he admitted being drunk-and-disorderly and pleaded guilty to two counts of assaulting a police officer after the incident on December 21.

Karen Moxon-Smith said Hogan suffers with depression and he had been persuaded to join his father’s Christmas works-do but he does not normally drink.

Hogan claimed he was taken straight to the ground by police without any discussion and he thought he was going to be suffocated.

Magistrates adjourned the case until February 19 to consider a probation report before sentencing.
