Booze-fuelled South Yorkshire thug locked-up after two town centre attacks

Sheffield Crown Court heard on January 18 how Harry Wheeler, aged 19, of Hunningley Lane, Stairfoot, Barnsley, attacked a male outside a bar near Peel Square and Wellington Street, Barnsley, and attacked another male who been recording the first attack on his phone.

Daniel Penman, prosecuting, said CCTV operators spotted Wheeler in Peel Square before he was seen outside the Digital bar, on Wellington Street, and as a male comes out the defendant kicks him and stamps on his head.

Mr Penman added as another male records the incident on his phone Wheeler attacks him causing a laceration to his lip and an injury to the back of his head.

Judge Rachael Harrison told Wheeler: “This is town centre violence at 4am in the morning. This was two sustained, unprovoked assaults with a shod-foot. They were horrific attacks and you were completely out of control.”

Wheeler, who has previous convictions, pleaded guilty to an attempted assault concerning the first victim who refused to co-operate with police. Wheeler also admitted unlawful wounding concerning the second victim after the incidents on June 16, 2019.

Richard Davies, defending, said Wheeler who has learning difficulties had been drinking excessively.

Mr Davies added: “It’s a disgraceful incident and he accepts that and wishes to express remorse about his behaviour that night.”

Judge Harrison sentenced Wheeler to 13 months of custody in a Young Offender Institution.
