An examination of the device later established that it was a replica grenade and residents were allowed to return to their homes.

The device was given to police officers by the current occupant of a house visited as part of routine enquiries to try to find an outstanding suspect wanted for questioning by South Yorkshire Police.

When the alarm was raised, Cliff Road was immediately sealed off to traffic and pedestrians and all emergency services were alerted to the discovery.
