'This behaviour will not be tolerated': What police chief said after woman spat at South Yorkshire officers

A woman has received a suspended prison sentence for coughing and spitting at South Yorkshire Police officers during the coronavirus outbreak.

Keeley Jones, aged 34, of Highstone View, Worsbrough Common, Barnsley, was arrested by officers on Tuesday.

And while in custody she spat and coughed at two police officers and a detention officers – claiming she had Covid-19.

She appeared at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court today after being charged with three counts of assault on an emergency service worker.

Jones received a 16-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months and an eight-week curfew via an electronic tag.

She was ordered to pay £75 to each of her victims.

Chief Inspector for Barnsley Andy Berriman said: “Our officers are absolutely committed to serving our communities here in Barnsley, our front line remains at full strength despite the challenges around Covid-19.

“While I am pleased that majority of the public are supportive of our officers, there are a few who believe that they can use the current Covid-19 crisis to threaten, intimidate or try to cause harm to officers.

“This behaviour will not be tolerated and we will ensure that those who do so are brought before the courts.”

South Yorkshire officers are enforcing lockdown laws aimed at preventing the spread of coronavirus.

According to figures released yesterday, South Yorkshire Police issued 118 fines over a two week period.

People can only leave their homes for shopping, exercise, essential travel to work and medical supplies or appointments.
