Jail for Barnsley man who kicked stepdad repeatedly in face as he lay unconscious

A heartbroken mother described the assault and its fallout as “the worst kind of grief”

A Barnsley man and former prison inmate who kicked his stepdad repeatedly to the face as he lay unconscious during a domestic row has been jailed.

Drunk Samual Goodings, aged 34, left his mother’s husband with a fractured eye socket and cheek during the brutal assault on October 22, 2024.

Judge Michael Slater told Goodings the incident was a “drink-fuelled and savage attack”.

The defendant’s mother had to “drag” Goodings off her husband as he lay on their driveway, the court heard.

Sheffield Crown Court heard the row broke out around 10.45pm when Goodings’ stepdad - who had just returned from a Leeds United match - informed him his dog was “not welcome in the house”.

Gooding’s had, the court heard, brought the dog with him after having a fall-out wit his partner.

After telling the complainant he would “knock your f****** head off” he struck him to the face.

He was heard calling the older man a “scabby Leeds b*****” during the assault.

Katherine Wright, prosecuting, said: “She had just got her husband off and into the recovery position. The defendant kept kicking the complainant to the face.”

Goodings’ mother, who described her previously-convicted son’s worsening behaviour as “the worst kind of grief”, had to “drag” him away as her husband lay on their driveway, the court heard.

In a statement read to the court Goodings’ stepdad - who had supported and visited the defendant while he was serving previous prison term - said his family had “changed beyond comparison” following the attack.

Goodings’ heartbroken mother said she believed if she not not dragged him off her husband the outcome may have been “very different” and she still awoke to the sound of her husband “choking on his own blood”.

The defendant, of West End Crescent, Royston, admitted grievous bodily harm without intent.

The court heard he had three previous convictions for six offences including common assault, drink driving and controlling and coercive behaviour.

In 2023 he was jailed for nine months for the latter offence.

His barrister Ian West said Goodings had shown “genuine regret and remorse” and his client had a “drink problem”.

Judge Micahel Slater told him: “This was a drink-fuelled and savage attack on the partner and husband of your mother in his own back garden.

“What is particularly concerning is you accept kicking him in the face while he lay prone on the ground in no condition to defend himself.”

Judge Slater added immediate custody was the “only appropriate disposal” and jailed Goodings for 16 months.

He handed him an indefinite restraining order.
