A South Yorkshire man suspected of historic child sex abuse has been found dead.

Kenneth Wheatley, aged 62, of Cliffe Crescent, Barnsley, was struck by a train on the line between Dodworth and Silkstone Common after he was arrested over the allegations.

The former care worker was accused of sexually abusing boys at a Suffolk boarding school and at a north Wales care home.

An inquest into the death has been opened and adjourned pending further enquiries.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission had been made aware of the death, on April 12.

A South Yorkshire police spokesman said: “We referred the matter to the IPCC as the man had been held in South Yorkshire Police custody on behalf of other forces which were investigating him.

“The issue of contact with South Yorkshire Police officers has since been investigated by the force’s professional standards department in line with recommendations from the IPCC. No further action is to be taken.”
