Andrew Hayes, aged 41, was spotted by police driving at speed on the southbound carriageway of the M1 at Sheffield, according to a Sheffield Magistrates’ Court hearing.

Matthew Duffy, prosecuting, told the hearing on January 9 how Hayes had passed vehicles in both the first and third lanes at about 90mph on December 8.

Hayes, of Salcombe Drive, Redhill, Nottingham, was stopped by police on the Junction 33 slip road and breath-tested, according to Mr Duffy, after he smelled of alcohol and was unsteady on his feet.

He pleaded guilty to exceeding the alcohol drink-drive limit.

David Gittins, defending, said Hayes is a self-employed office-fitter whose business may be at risk with a drink-drive ban.

Magistrates fined Hayes £600 and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

He was banned from driving for 12 months.
