Axe-wielding masked raiders struck at a South Yorkshire jewellery shop escaping with a quantity of watches.
Three masked men – armed with an axe and a hammer – burst into the premises of Bell Brothers and HL Browns jewellery shop in St Sepulchre Gate, Doncaster town centre, just before 11.25am today.
The raiders threatened terrified staff with the hammer and axe before fleeing with the quantity of watches.
The gang made their getaway in a car – damaging a police vehicle as they desperately tried to escape.
The getaway car crashed on Hall Gate and was abandoned by the robbers who then fled on foot.
Police have since recovered the crashed car.
Detective Sergeant Andy Knowles said: “This robbery was committed in broad daylight in a busy part of the town centre.
“The staff at the store have been left shaken, but thankfully uninjured, by this incident and we need to find the persons responsible.
“We are appealing to anyone who may have been in the town centre this lunchtime and may have seen something, please give us a call and tell us what you know.”
The three men were wearing dark clothing and balaclavas.
Sky sales advisor Mitch Smith, aged 21, who works at a stall on the High Street and working when the armed robbers made their escape, said: “We heard the driver of the car beeping his horn.
“He beeped two or three times, and then three or four men ran out and got into the car.
“The car sped off, past Barclays and up the High Street.”
